How Can I Become a Security Guard?

The purpose of this blog is to show you how easy it is to become a private security officer in Australia. To be a licensed private security guard in Australia is not complicated; but it is a process, and there are training, certifications and licenses you will acquire before you can start working as a private security officer.

Though every state and territory in Australia have got their separate Licensing process; and most of them are similar, except for a few differences here and there.

Private Security Guard: List

Age: Before you can become a private security guard in Australia, you must be at list 18 years or over.

Residence: You must be resident in Australia for at list 12 months. Though you can do the security training course before then; but, you will only be eligible for a private security guard license after you have spent 12 months or more in Australia.

Gender:  Anyone can become a private security guard, regardless of their gender; but I must stress a point, that there is a shortage of female private security guards in Australia. So, if you are female, your chances of scoring a good security guard job from numerous security companies in Australia is much brighter!

So if you are a female, and you are thinking of becoming a private security guard, I will encourage you to go for it, you are most likely to get an excellent role and good pay.

Study: Even though you might be 18 or over, you can’t just get the Police or the Department of justice to issue you with a private security guard license; you must enrol in a Private Security Guard Training School, and do a minimum of Certificate 2 in Security Operations.

Criminal Check: After you have completed your Cert 2 in Security Operations, the school might show or assist with the process of filling a Criminal Police Check, and Fingerprint forms and do the application for you. It will cost you some amount of money, and it may take two to 4 weeks for you to get a response. And a copy will be mailed to the Police or the  Department of justice; then you will be issued you with an invoice to pay for the License.

Take note; if you have got a recent criminal history or charges, I will advise you call your state or territory Police or Department of Justice and ask them if you will be eligible for a private security guard license.

License: If you have a got a clean criminal history/record, and your fingerprint is all done; then it is time to pay for the private security guard license. After payment, it may take you another 10-30 days, before you will receive your private security guard license in the mail. then, you can start looking for a security guard job.

Private Security Guard: Pay

Pay: Most newbies in the private security industry, often start working in private events, night clubs, major events etc. But, be very careful as there are a lot of dodgy security companies out there, that will want to employ you for below security guards award wage. If you don’t know what the right award wage is, please click this Link or search on Google, ‘security Industry award wage.

Some security companies in Australia may be paying you based on an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA), but make sure the EBA is current, and that you are not worst-off at a minimum, compared to the Award wage overall.
